Idaho Suicide Data & Research

If you or someone you know is considering suicide,
please contact the
National Suicide Hotline (800-273-8255).

The reports below are intended to support the Idaho suicide prevention community with factual data in their efforts to promote suicide prevention, raise community awareness, apply for funding, and more.

Impact of Suicides in Idaho presents demographics, circumstances and geographic distribution of actual suicides in Idaho, drawing on sources such as the IDHW Vital statistics, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, law enforcement, etc.

Special At-Risk Populations for Suicide in Idaho presents demographics, circumstance and risk and protective factor information about four groups identified as at high risk for suicide in Idaho. Data from 2003 through 2010 is available. The four special at-risk groups are:
  • Teen Males & Suicides in Idaho
  • Native American Males & Suicides in Idaho
  • Working Age Males & suicides in Idaho
  • Elderly Males & Suicides in Idaho
Risk and Protective Factors for Suicide presents numerical data representing community risk factors and protective factors that may raise or lower the chance that someone in a community will attempt or complete suicide. Risk and protective factors can aid in understanding a community problem and can form the basis of a community plan to address the problem. The Department of Education's Substance Use and School Climate Survey (SUSCS) is no longer delivered in Idaho, thus the last available SUSCS data is from 2008. Additionally, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) is only delivered in Idaho on odd numberd years. The last available YRBSS data is from 2009.
